Suparn Pandey, co-founder of ScoopWhoop, has reportedly been accused of sexual harassment by one of their former employees. The complainant has allegedly told the police that between the period 2015 and 2017, she was repeatedly harassed by Mr Pandey. She also said to have alleged that the other two co-founders did not intervene and did nothing to help her. After she told about this harassment to Sriparna Tikekar, another co-founder ScoopWhoop, she was given verbal assurance that this would stop immediately, but no action was taken against Suparn and the harassment continued. Apart from Suparn Pandey, both the other two co-founders Mishra and Sriparna Tikekar have also been accused of having abetted the harassment.
The complainant further alleged that Suparn Pandey sent her obscene videos and made offensive remarks. He also “kissed her forehead” after a private interaction at the office which left her feeling “physically violated” and “disgusted”. She was said to be dissuaded from lodging a formal complaint against Suparn Pandey and was also threatened about her career prospects. She also said to be have resigned as she could not handle the harassment any more.
The complaint has been filed at Vasant Kunj Police Station, New Delhi. Suparn is said to be booked under the Indian Penal Code sections 354 A (sexual harassment), section 509 (insulting the modesty of a woman) and section 506 (criminal intimidation). Although Pandey filed for anticipatory bail, but the court denied his bail plea.
Set up ScoopWhoop in 2013; the start-up has raised over 5 million dollars in funding so far.
It is a shame that women are still being harassed at their work place and there seems to be no fear of law. The case comes just a few days after a case was filed by Arunabh Kumar, the founder of The Viral Fever, for sexually harassing his employees, though he denied the charges.
