Sawan 2020: Puja of Shivlinga – Things you should not offer on Shivlinga
Puja of Shivlinga – While performing Puja of Shivlinga, do not offer the following:
Turmeric or Haldi
Turmeric is feminine in nature and is considered a cosmetic product for females while Shivlinga represents masculinity, hence it is not offered to Lord Shiva.

Tulsi or Basil Leaves
While doing Puja of Shivlinga, Tulsi can be a good option. This is because Tulsi was the wife of Jalandhar who was blessed with a boon of immortality subject to his wife’s chastity. To save people from the atrocities of Jalandhar, Lord Vishnu disrupted Tulsi’s chastity and Lord Shiva burnt him to ashes. Tulsi got enraged over this and banished her leaves to be ever used for Shiv puja.
Kumkum or Sindoor
Kumkum is applied by married women for the long life of their husbands. Lord Shiva is considered to be the “destroyer” hence kumkum is not used for his puja.

Coconut Water
Coconut water when offered in Puja is mandatory to drink as Prasad. But, consuming whatever is offered on Shivlinga is forbidden. Hence coconut water is not offered on Shivlinga. If you want, you can offer the whole coconut.
Champa & Ketaki Flowers
Champa flowers were cursed by Narada Rishi for lying to him and taking sides with a Brahmin who used Champa flowers to please Lord Shiva, thereby becoming powerful in King’s court and harassing the poor. Ketaki flower was cursed by Lord Shiva himself for supporting a lie of Lord Brahma that he had reached the uppermost limit of the mighty column of light, Shivalinga.

Lord Shiva is considered to be very soft-hearted and easy to please. Even if you do not know any Mantras, just worship Him with a pure heart and he will bless you.
