Interesting facts about R Madhavan– R Madhavan is an Indian actor, writer and film producer who was born on 1 June 1970 in Jamshedpur to Ranganathan and Saroja in a Tamil family. His full name is Madhavan Balaji Ranganathan. Having worked in movies in various languages, he is much loved by all the cinema lovers. His fans love his acting and the heartful smile.

  • Madhavan’s father, Mr. Rangnathan was working with Tata Steel. His mother, Mrs. Saroja was working as a manager with the Bank of India. He has a younger sister Devika who is now settled in UK.  
  • Madhavan got a scholarship from Rajaram College, Kolhapur in 1988 to represent India as a cultural ambassador. He was sent to Canada as part of an exchange program with Rotary International. After returning to Kolhapur he completed his graduation with a degree in electronics. 
  • While Madhavan was studying for his degree, he also took NCC training and was recognized as one of the best NCC cadets in Maharashtra. He, along with seven NCC cadets, went to England where he received training from the British Army for the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. He tried to join the army but he missed the age cut-off by six months and was unable to join.

He began to give PDP classes in Kolhapur and later pursued post-graduation in public speaking from Mumbai.

In 1992, he won the Indian Championship for Public Speaking and represented India at the Young Businessmen Conference in Tokyo.

  • Madhavan worked in a sandalwood talc advertisement which was directed by Santosh Sivan in 1996. After seeing his performance, Sivan recommended him to Mani Ratnam in a screen test for a role in Iruvar (1997). Madhavan gave the audition for the Tamizhselvan but Mani Ratnam rejected him saying “his eyes looked too young for a senior role”.
  • He appeared in leading roles in Zee TV’s shows Banegi Apni Baat and Ghar Jamai. He also acted as a ship’s captain in Sea Hawks, as a convict in TV serial Yeh Kahan Aa Gaye Hum.

  • Vinod Pandey, a Hindi film director signed Madhavan for a Bollywood movie titled Akeli, but the film was later shelved.
  • After appearing in TV commercials and in many small roles, he was seen in the romantic Tamil film Alaipayuthey released in 2000.
  • In 2002, Madhavan played the role of a novelist in Mani Ratnam’s film, ‘Kannathil Muthamittal’.
  • After 2005, Madhavan increased his work in Hindi films and started writing Hindi dialogues as well.
  • His only release in 2011 was the romantic drama film, Tanu Weds Manu with Kangana Ranaut.

  • Madhavan has appeared in various advertisements for brands like Bajaj, Ponds, Fair and Lovely and TVS. In 2015, Snapdeal signed Aamir Khan and Madhavan as the company’s ambassadors, as they wanted to use Madhavan’s popularity in South India to market their services.
  • In 2018, Madhavan was seen in Savyasachi where he played his first full-length role in a Telugu film.
  • Some of the most popular films of Madhavan are 3 Idiots, Saala Khadoos, Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, Tanu Weds Manu and many others.
  • R Madhavan married Sarita Birje in 1999, before Madhavan entered mainstream films. The couple have a son named, Vedaant, who was born in August 2005.
  • Madhavan has received four Filmfare Awards, Best Male Debut award for Alaipayuthey, Best Supporting Actor for Aaytha Ezhuthu, and Best Actor for Irudhi Suttru.
