An edge of the seat thriller, one that went down right to the last over before Delhi prevailed to move onto the second qualifier. The eliminator between the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Delhi Capitals was a true humdinger, one completely worthy of a clash of such massive stature. Held in reverence, the encounter was played out in similar fashion as neither side gave anything away in their quest to take on the Chennai Super Kings on Friday.

Chasing what was a decent 162 run total put on by SRH batting first, the Delhi side showed yet again that they just can’t do things the easy way. Maligned for collapsing from positions of strength and throwing matches away from winning situations, Delhi looked set to do the same yet again as the middle-order display saw them fall apart.

Delhi got off their chase in pristine fashion, ruling over the encounter at the halfway stage. With the scoreboard reading 82-1 in 10 overs, Delhi were in complete control of the match, well on top of an SRH agonizing bowling effort that saw them massively chase the match. Despite picking up Dhawan for 17 runs, SRH had lapsed to allow the out of form Shaw score 56, an innings that alongside Pant’s 49 saw Delhi rampantly make light work of SRH.

It was in the 11th over though that SRH started digging a way back in the encounter for themselves. In what was a double blow for Delhi, Khaleel sent both Shreyas and Shaw packing and despite Pant coming to and taking off from ball one, Delhi at the other end saw wickets pummel by the minute.

Given the slightest room, SRH barged into the room as they opened the door wide open for themselves. Rashid Khan’s final over saw 0 runs come in it, one in which he caught Munro right in front of the wickets, trapped on the pads to send him back for 14. Wasting their review on a decision that was as easy as they get, Delhi were left in dire need of it as the umpire gave Axar out for nick to the wicket-keeper off the subsequent delivery. Replays showed the ball had hit the thigh but the damage was already down for Delhi who lost 2 wickets at 111, a score that was proving to be an extremely unlucky one on the day.

It was a massive setback for Delhi and with over 40 runs needed in the final 4 overs, it looked that SRH might just have scripted from themselves a tremendous. However, Williamson got his captaincy all wrong by not giving Khaleel the 19th over. With the 19th reading 4,6,6,4, one that was plundered for 22 runs by Pant, the match looked to have run its course as Delhi went into the final one needing just the 5 runs.

The twists and turns for the day weren’t completed just yet though. The cliff-hanger had to change hands one last time as Amt Mishra walked back off the third ball of the over, an incredible dismal that saw him being given out for obstructing the bowler’s line of vision. As SRH took an extreme astute DRS, Mishra was found guilty of changing direction deliberately to block the non-striker’s wickets being knocked over. Needing 2 runs in 2 balls, Delhi for once managed to hang onto their composure with a boundary doing the trick for them.

Earlier in the day, a lack of a true partnership saw SRH end up at least 10 runs short. They had cameos in the form of Guptill (36), Shankar(25) and Nabi(20) but not one inning of note. It left them struggling to pile the runs on in the death overs, something that came to bite them back as the match played out its script.
