India continued their fine form of the test series to trash hosts Sri Lanka by 9 wickets as they successfully chased down 216 in just 29 overs. Dismissing Sri Lanka for a below par 216, India chased down the total with consummate ease to embarrass Sri Lanka in their own backyard. Powered by Shikhar Dhawan’s 132, India struck first blood in the ODI series.
Having demolished Sri Lanka 3-0 in the test series, India were looking to repeat their performances from the test matches in the shorter format of the game. Facing Sri Lanka in the first ODI at Dambulla, the Indian team looked rested and high on spirits as they took to the ground. Batting first Sri Lanka started strongly as the opening pair put on 74 and at the 25 over mark, Sri Lanka were sitting comfortably on 139-2. It looked they had finally overcome their batting demons of the recent past as a strong start had given them all the ingredients to pose a strong total for the Indian team. However, the Sri Lankans went on the show the recent apathetic state of their team, as an embarrassing collapse saw them go from 132-2 to 216 all out, with none of the last six batsmen even reaching double figures. Spinner Axar Patel picked up 3, with Bumrah and Chahal nabbing up two wickets each.
Riding on the back of a strong bowling performance, the Indian batsmen came out and looked to end the match in a hurry.Shikhar Dhawan played rapturous innings on 132 of just 90 balls and was well aided by Captain Virat Kohli who got a fine. The two took on the Lankan bowlers in style as they rushed the team to victory in no time.
