Sri Lanka vs England match highlights – The senior players of Sri Lanka finally have delivered when the team needed the most. Sri Lanka defeated England by 20 runs on the tricky Leeds pitch. Angelo Mathews with the bat and Lasith Malinga with the ball were the heroes for the Lankan Side.

Sri Lanka’s batting
Sri Lanka batted first and they didn’t start well as they did it against Australia in their last match. The Sri Lankan openers went quickly. They lost a wicket in the 1st over. Jofra Archer removed the Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne for 1 run. Then, Chris Woakes struck for England in the second over. Kusal Perera was out caught by Moen Ali for just 2 runs.

Avishka Fernando made a good world cup debut for Sri Lanka. He and Kusal Mendis steadied the innings for a bit. They shared a small partnership of 69 runs which allowed Sri Lankan batsmen to get into a rhythm. As both the batsmen were near to getting 50s, Mark Wood broke this tiny stand and brought England back into this contest. Avishka Fernando fell for 49 runs.

Kusal Mendis continued his skills, this time it was Angelo Mathews. Mendis and Mathews continued the rebuilding process and again Mendis fell when he was just 4 short of fifty. Mendis and Mathews shared 71 runs partnership which was about to set the tome for Sri Lanka. But Adil Rashid was the one who dismissed Kusal Mendis for 46 runs and the Sri Lankan innings didn’t take a turn which they wanted.
Adil Rashid had 2 wickets in that over, both the Mendis were dismissed on back to back deliveries. Jeevan Mendis was out without troubling the scorers.

Angelo Mathews was the one who stood like a solid rock. He also couldn’t do much as England bowlers bowled some tight lines. Sri Lanka needed some big hits unfortunately for them both Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva failed to provide that. Dhananjaya struggled to time the ball and he was finally out after playing a slow inning. He was dismissed by Jofra Archer for 29 runs for which he took 47 balls.

The Sri Lankan innings missed big shots in the last few overs. Angelo Mathews tried his best but he wasn’t able to do so. He kept losing partners at the other end as England dismissed Thisara Perera, Udana, and Lasith Malinga quickly. It was a lone fight for Angelo Mathews which took Sri Lanka to a modest score. Mathews played a good hand. He was unbeaten on 85 runs with Nuwan Pradeep, who was not out at 1 run. Sri Lanka managed to reach 232 for the loss of 9 wickets in their allotted 50 overs.

England was spot on with their bowling attack. They were successful in restricting Sri Lanka for a low score. They made it hard for them in the death overs. England’s bowling was such that Sri Lanka managed to hit only 2 sixes in their entire 50 overs. Jofra Archer and Mark wood took 3 wickets each while Adil Rashid took 2 and Chris Woakes picked up 1 wicket to his name.

It seemed this will be an easy chase for England, especially the form which their batsmen are in.

But the Sri Lankan bowlers came out with strong intent. Lasith Malinga dismissed Johnny Bairstow on the 2nd ball of the first over. Sri Lanka started the innings with a bang, Bairstow was out for a golden duck.
Then, in-form Root and James Vince played together for a bit. But James Vince too couldn’t last for long. Malinga took his 2nd wicket in the form of Vince. He was dismissed for 14 runs. England were in a spot of bother as skipper Morgan joined Root. England batsmen were never tested before this match and that too in a run chase. Morgan and Root batted decently; they went according to the required run rate. Their partnership was about to grow. But just then, Udana took a sharp return catch to dismiss the England captain. Eoin Morgan was out for 21 runs.

Root batted for his half-century but couldn’t take the innings along as he did in the past. He fell for 57 runs. The hosts had some partnerships in between but they couldn’t share a big match-winning partnership. The Lankan bowlers chipped in with wickets at regular intervals. Jos Buttler, England’s best finisher, lasted for only 9 balls. He was out for just 10 runs.

Moen Ali went to hit one shot for too many and he was caught in deep by brilliant Udana. Ali was out for 16 runs. Adil Rashid and Woakes too were dismissed early and it was a tough task for Ben Stokes who tried his best. Ben Stokes played a lone hand and got England over the 200 run mark. His 85 unbeaten runs were the highlight of the England inning. England fell short by 20 runs.

The Lankan bowlers bowled their hearts out. They successfully defended a modest score of 233 runs.
Lasith Malinga was the star and he also earned the Man of the Match award for his performance. He took 4 wickets and gave away only 43 runs from his 10 overs. Malinga was equally well supported by Dhananjaya de Silva. He took 3 wickets while Udana took 2 and Nuwan Pradeep took 1 wicket to his name. Sri Lanka kept their hopes alive with this win. They beat England by 20 runs.
