India suffered heartbreak in the Sultan of Johor Cup final in Malaysia, going down 2-3 to Britain. In a repeat of the round-robin clash between the two countries, Great Britain downed India by the same score-line to win their second Sultan of Johor Cup title.

For last year bronze medallists, the final started off perfectly. Lashing onto a rebound from a penalty corner, Vishnukant Singh opened the scoring for the Indians in as early as the fourth minute. However, the joy was short-lived for the Indians with Britain drawing level just three minutes later through Daniel West’s field goal.

The equaliser gave Britain just the incentive they needed. Settling into their groove, Britain found their footing into the match with West’s goal. This lead to an equally contested second half, one that saw both sides playing a fine brand of hockey, testing each other’s back-lines while maintaining their defensive shape to perfection.

The third quarter was a different story with Britain upping the ante. Troubling India with their attacks, Britain broke through India’s defence with success in the 39th and 42nd minute. A surprising lack of cohesion in the Indian defence saw their defenders be dragged out of position, allowing Britain’s forwards to get into goal scoring positions. James Oates made the most of India’s disruption at the back, scoring twice in 3 minutes to give last year’s silver medallists a vital 3-1 lead going into the fourth quarter.

India’s fighting spirit going into the dying moments of the game almost saw them salvage the match. A gutsy performance by an Indian side that was desperate to turn things around was heart-warming to see. Managing to get one back in the 55th minute, India failed to find another meaningful opportunity after that with Britain’s experience and guile helping them close shop to see them win the eight Sultan of Johor Cup.
