Sunil Chhetri appealed to football fanatics across India to come out and support the Indian football team in stadiums. In a video message posted by him, he urged fans to show the same passion for the national side as they did for the European clubs and countries they supported. The message gathered fire quickly and was retweeted more than 90,000 times. He spoke about the players’ need for huge crowds at matches to support the team and edge them on. His message went on as:

“I mean it’s not fun to criticise and abuse on internet. Come to the stadium, do it on our face, scream at us, shout at us, abuse us, who knows one day we might change you guys, you might start cheering for us. You guys have no idea how important you guys are and how important your support is,” the skipper appealed.

His request found support in one of India’s most famous and popular sporting star. Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli took to Twitter a few hours later to post a similar appeal to football lovers.

In his video message Kohli said, “In support of what my good friend and Indian captain Sunil Chhetri posted sometime back, I want to request everyone to go and watch Indian football play. Anyone who loves any kind of sport, go and cheer for the team in the stadiums because they are working hard, they are a talented team and I have seen these players evolve and learn over the last few seasons and get so much better at their game.”

Kohli’s love for the game is well known with him supporting European and English super-giants Chelsea with great passion. He also plays a celebrity football charity match everywhere and is an ambassador for domestic side Goa FC. Kohli’s endorsement of more numbers needing to come out to stadiums to support and motivate the national football side will surely go a long way in reaching out to huge masses and helping in garnering in a higher number of match attendance for future matches. Are you going to support Indian football team?
