The 2021 edition is the postponed edition of the 2020 T20 World Cup which was pushed to 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Also the ICC Women’s 50 Over World Cup scheduled to be held in New Zealand in Feb-March ’21 is now postponed to 2022 owing to the botched up calendar. Post the announcement of the postponement of the Men’s T20 World Cup in July, a rough schedule for holding the ICC events in 2021, 2022 and 2023 was decided. ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney said in an interview that they now had absolute clarity on the future of the ICC events in the coming years. The cricketing community was left in confusion owing to the messed up sporting calendar as the coronavirus pandemic had brought the world to a halt. He also said that they would now proceed as planned with the Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 in India and host the 2022 edition in Australia.

The 2021 T20 World Cup to be played in India will have exactly the same rules and format that were decided for the 2020 event, with the teams which were already qualified for the event participating in the 20 over format of the game. However, a new process for deciding the participants of the 2022 T20 World Cup will be place from next year. Regarding the qualification process of the Women’s 50 over world cup, 5 teams had already qualified for the event which was to be held in 2021 in New Zealand and the remaining 3 teams were to be decided based on a qualification tournament to be held in Sri Lanka.

Since the tournament was postponed owing to the coronavirus pandemic, it will now be held in 2021. Sawhney said that with the 50 over Women’s World Cup now postponed to 2022, every member nation would have ample time and opportunity to practice for the prestigious event. Since no international women’s cricket has been organized since the T20 World Cup in March, all teams would require certain amount of time to recover from the break that the pandemic put them since March this year.
