Team India test win stats against New Zealand – India’s struggles in overseas conditions continue as they have not beaten New Zealand in a Test match since their tour of 2009. It seems India is yet to master batting techniques for playing in South Africa, New Zealand, England, and Australian conditions. Men in blue don’t have impressive records in these SENA countries. From 1968, India has been touring to the Kiwi nation and since then India has won just 5 Test matches on the New Zealand soil. In New Zealand, 25 test matches have been played between India and New Zealand out of which Kiwis won 10 matches while the other 10 resulted in a draw.

It was in the year 1968 when India won its first-ever Test series in New Zealand. That Indian Team was led by Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and since then, MS Dhoni is the only second Indian skipper till now to achieve this similar feat. India toured New Zealand earlier this year led by Virat Kohli. Though India defeated New Zealand 5-0 in the series of the shortest format, Kiwis came back strongly and won the ODI series by 3-0 and Test series by 2-0.  Since 2009, India has not won a single test match in that country. So, let’s refresh our memories of India’s wins on New Zealand soil.

India Vs New Zealand – Dunedin 1968 – India won by the Test match by 5 Wickets – This was India’s first tour to New Zealand and the Indian Team under the captaincy of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi started this tour with a bang. India won this test match which was their first overseas win. The visitors restricted New Zealand for 350 runs in their 1st innings. This was after Graham Dowling scored 143 runs and Bev Congdon scored 58 runs while Mark Burgess scored 50 runs.

For India it was Syed Abid Ali who picked up 4 wickets while Bapu Nadkarni and Ramakant Desai picked up 2 wickets each to their names. While batting, India didn’t have any centurion in their innings. But they still managed to get a 9 run lead in the match. Farokh Engineer and Ajit Wadekar were the top scorers for India. Wadekar scored 80 runs and Engineer scored 63 runs.

In the second innings of New Zealand, the hosts managed to score just 208 runs, which was mainly due to the six-wicket haul of Erapalli Prasanna. For New Zealand, only the opening batsman Bruce Murray scored 54 runs and due to that New Zealand had set an easy target for India of 199 runs which India chased down in the end. India lost 5 wickets in this chase, but Ajit Wadekar and Rusi Warti guided India home in this run chase. India went 1-0 up in the series and they kept the dream to win the series on the first-ever tour.

India Vs New Zealand – Wellington 19868 – India won the Test match by 8 Wickets – This was the third match of the series where New Zealand managed to make a comeback and the 4 match test match series was leveled to 1-1. In this match too the Kiwis batted first but could manage to score only 186 runs. The Indian bowlers made a good comeback. Erapalli took 5 wickets in New Zealand’s 1st innings as India had a complete hold on this Test match. The visitors also batted well. India scored 327 runs in their 1st innings. Ajit Wadekar was the first centurion for India in New Zealand. Wadekar scored 143 runs for India. In the second innings, New Zealand scored just 199 runs and had only two half centurions in that inning. Mark Burgess scored 60 runs and Bev Congdon scored 50 runs. For India, it was Bapu Nadkarni who picked up 6 wickets to his name. New Zealand had set a very reachable score of 58 runs which India chased down very easily. India was 2-1 up in the series.

India vs New Zealand – Auckland 1968 – India won the Test match by 272 Runs – This was the fourth and the final test match for India on this tour. With 2 test wins already in their kitty, the visitors aimed to clinch the series in Auckland. This time it was India who batted first. They managed to score just 252 runs. India had only one-half centurion in the 1st innings and that player was Skipper Pataudi who made 51 runs for India. But the Indian bowlers made a good comeback into the match. Erapalli Prasanna continued his brilliant form as he was the highest wicket-taker for India in this series. He took another 4 wickets to his name and with him, Bishen Singh Bedi and Rusi Surti picked up 2 wickets each.

India’s response to New Zealand’s 140 was another big one. Rusi Surti missed his well-deserved ton by just 1 run. Surti was out on 99 runs. While Chandu Borde scored 65 runs. India scored 261 runs in their 2nd innings and the visitors had set a target of 373 runs for New Zealand to win this last test match. New Zealand was never in the game as they lost wickets at regular intervals. It was Erapaali Prasanna again who took the most number of wickets in the 2nd innings of New Zealand. The Indian spinner took 4 wickets and with him, Bishen Singh Bedi took 3 wickets and Rusi Surti picked up 2 wickets to his name. India won the 4th test match by a mammoth margin of 272 runs and also clinched the first-ever overseas series to their name.

India Vs New Zealand – Auckland 1976 – India won the Test match by 8 Wickets – This test match was the first match of the three-match Test series between India and New Zealand. India toured New Zealand under the captaincy of Sunil Gavaskar. But this series was drawn even after India started this tour with a win. In this match, New Zealand won the toss and batted first. The hosts scored 266 runs in their 1st innings. For New Zealand, Bevan Congdon scored 54 runs. For India, it was BS Chandrashekhar who created havoc in New Zealand camp. Chandrashekhar picked up 6 wickets to his name. By doing so he had already put India in the front and later, the batsmen too applied themselves well and piled up 414 runs in their 1st innings. Surinder Amarnath scored 124 runs and Skipper Sunil Gavaskar scored 116 runs for Team India.

Though India had an early advantage in this match, still, the bowlers put up their best performances. Erapalli Prasanna again demolished the Kiwi batters with 8 wickets. He ensured that New Zealand had no chance to make a comeback in this match. Due to his 8 wicket haul, the hosts scored just 215 runs in their second innings and left an easy score for India to chase. The Kiwis had set a target of 69 runs which India chased down by losing just two wickets. India won their 4th match on the New Zealand soil by 8 wickets.

India Vs New Zealand – Hamilton 2009 – India won the Test match by 10 Wickets – This was the last win for India in New Zealand. Dhoni was the second Indian captain to win a Test series on New Zealand’s soil. India had started with a win on this tour of New Zealand. The hosts batted first and scored 279 runs in their innings. Jesse Ryder scored 102 runs and Skipper Daniel Vettori scored 118 runs for the team. For India, it was Ishant Sharma who picked up 4 wickets alongside Munaf Patel who took 3 wickets, Zak took 2 and Bhajji picked up 1 wicket to his name.

When India batted in their 1st innings, the visitors put up a comprehensive batting performance. The Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar scored 160 runs, Gautam Gambhir smashed 72 runs while Dravid crafted his way and scored 66 runs. Zak also contributed with unbeaten 51 runs. India piled up 520 runs in their 1st innings.

The hosts went under pressure due to this high score. But their batting display in the second innings remained the same.  New Zealand scored just 279 runs in their second innings. Brendon McCullum played a knock of 84 runs while Daniel Flynn scored 67 runs for the Kiwis. The Indian bowlers were good again. This time it was Harbhajan Singh who picked up a 6 wicket haul for team India.  The Kiwis had set a target of 38 runs which India chased down without losing any wickets. India won this Test by 10 wickets and the series too because the last two test matches of this three-match series were drawn.
