Team India test win stats against South Africa – India has always found the tour of South Africa very tough. The Indian team has found it difficult to acclimatize themselves to the climatic conditions of South Africa and that is why South Africa is the only place where India is yet to win a Test series.

On the tour to South Africa in 2018, India won its first-ever One Day International series and T20 International series. But in the traditional format, Virat and his men were beaten heavily by The Proteas.

India has been touring South Africa since 1992 and from that point of time till India’s last tour of 2018, India has just 3 wins in their bank. The men in blue lost 10 test matches, while 7 test matches were a drawn affair. In 1992, when India toured South Africa, Mohd Azharuddin was the captain of the Indian team. Under his leadership, India played 4 test series on South African soil. But, the visiting team couldn’t win a single match.

India has won just three test matches in South Africa till now. India’s first-ever win on South African soil came under the leadership of Rahul Dravid.  On 15th December 2006, India won its first-ever test match in South Africa at Johannesburg, and then in 2010 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, India won its second test match in South Africa. Kohli is the third Indian captain to win a test match on South African soil. But none of these captains could win a test series in South Africa. This Test match was India’s first test win in South Africa. Rahul Dravid’s team India ended a long drought of a test win by winning this test match. This was the first test match of this tour played at The Wanderers Stadium. India batted first but they struggled to make their way and could score just 249 runs on the board. It was a gutsy half-century from the former Skipper Sourav Ganguly. He scored 51 runs and with him, Sachin Tendulkar also scored 44 runs.  South Africa’s 1st innings too didn’t go beyond 25 overs. S Sreesanth produced a magical spell that helped India to bundle out the hosts for just 84 runs. Sreesanth was impressive on his first-ever tour to South Africa. In the 1st match itself, he bagged a 5 wicket haul.

Then came the 2nd innings for India, but the story of their batting remained the same as India scored just 236 runs in the 2nd innings. VVS Laxman scored 73 runs which was the only half-century for India in the second innings. India had set a tough target in front of the hosts. The lead of India’s second innings was 401 runs. While South Africa was chasing that mammoth score, Indian bowlers shined again as Sreeshant continued from where he left in the 1st innings. For South Africa, the best game was resistance from Ashwell Prince. He scored a fighting 97 runs and with him, Shaun Pollack scored valuable 40 runs. But the rest of the batters struggled in front of Sreeshant and co.

Sreesanth, Zak, and Anil Kumble picked up 3 wickets each for India in the second innings of South Africa. This allowed the visitors to end the South African innings for just 278 runs and it gave India their first test win in South Africa. India won the match by a huge margin of 123 runs.

India Vs South Africa – Durban 2010 – India won the test match by 87 runsindia vs south africa test 2010

This was the only instance when India had successfully drawn the test series on South African soil. After South Africa had a winning start to the test series in Cape Town, India had to bounce back to square the series in Durban. This series was captained by MS Dhoni for India and he became the only captain to draw a test series in South Africa.

India batted first in this do or die encounter, but the visitors came under pressure again. Steyn and co ripped the batting powerhouse of India for just 205 runs on the board. Steyn Gun was on fire. He took 6 wickets to rattle the Indian batsmen.

Despite things being under the control of South Africa, the hosts couldn’t produce the score as they did in Cape Town. India made a magnificent comeback in the match by bowling South Africa out for just 131 runs. Terminator of India picked up 4 wickets along with Zak, who had three wickets to his name. In India’s second innings, they had a lead of 74 runs,  but still, they needed to build on that. In India’s second innings, things looked worse than their 1st innings. VVS Laxman scored 96 runs which helped India to score 228 runs. Other than Laxman, no batsman was able to handle Proteas bowlers. It was Morne Morkel and  Lonwabo Tsotsobe who took 3 wickets each for the hosts.

India had set a target of 303 runs for South Africa to win the series. But the Proteas failed again as they were bundled out for just 215 runs. There were no big contributions from them in their second innings. They allowed India to take the match away in style by 87 runs. Indian bowlers were good again as Zaheer Khan and Sreesanth picked up three-wicket each to their names. This win from India was just the second win on the South African Soil.

India Vs South Africa – Johannesburg 2018 – India won the Test match by 63 Runsindia vs south africa test 2018

This was the third and the last win for India in South Africa. This win came under Virat Kohli’s captaincy on India’s last tour to South Africa in 2018. On all the previous occasions, India batted poorly every time they visited the Proteas nation. They found it hard to deal with the swinging and bouncy pitches of South Africa. In Johannesburg too, Kohli and his men couldn’t bat well enough to win. But it was the bowlers who put India ahead in this match. India’s first innings lasted only 76.4 overs and in that, the visitors scored just 187 runs. There only three Indian batsmen who scored in double digits. Pujara scored 50 runs, Skipper Kohli scored 54 runs, and Bhuvneshwar scored 30 runs for the team. While the rest of the batters were out quickly.

South Africa was already ahead of India in this three-match test series. They continued with their best performance. Kagiso Rabada picked up 3 wickets while Morkel, Philander, and  Phehlukwayo took 2 wickets each to their names. But later South Africa batted like India. They were just 7 runs ahead of India’s total. Indian bowlers brought them back in the match. Jaspreet Bumrah picked up a 5 wicket haul on his first-ever tour of South Africa. This series was also the test debut for Boom Boom Bumrah and Bhuvi picked up 3 wickets as well. This magical spell for Bhuvi and Bumrah allowed India to bowl out South Africa for just 194 runs.

With just a 7 run deposit in the bank, India had to bat well in their second innings, but they couldn’t go on to score 300 runs which were expected of them. India’s second innings was over with 247 runs. There were no half centurions for India in their second innings. Some of the batsmen started well but couldn’t convert them into a big one. Virat scored 41 runs while the vice-captain Rahane score scored 48 runs. For South Africa, it was Philander, Rabada and Morkel who picked up 3 wickets each. But again they failed to bat well in front of the Indian bowlers. While they chased the target of 240 runs for a whitewash win over India, the Proteas crumpled for just 177 runs. Dean Elgar and Hashim Amla scored powerful 50s, but the middle order didn’t put up any fight in front of the Indian bowlers. Dean Elgar stayed unbeaten to guide his team through a win. But his gusty 86 run knock went in vain as South Africa lost the third and the final test against India by 63 runs. Virat became the third Indian skipper to win a test series in South Africa.
