1933 – Haradanahalli Doddegowda Deve Gowda is an Indian politician who was the 11th Prime Minister of India from 1 June 1996 to 21 April 1997. He was also the 14th Chief Minister of Karnataka between 1994 to 1996.

1970 – Sumathi Josephine, also popularly known as Rekha, is an Indian actress who acted in hit movies including Ramji Rao Speaking, Aey Auto in Malayalam, Punnagai Mannan, En Bommukutty Ammavukku, and Kadalora Kavithaigal in Tamil.

1988 – Sonalee Kulkarni is an Indian actress who mainly acts in Marathi and Bollywood films. After working as a model in her early career, Kulkarni made her debut in Kedar Shinde’s film Bakula Namdeo Ghotale, for which she also received the Zee Gaurav award for the best actress.

1988 – Zain Imam is an Indian television actor known for his portrayal of Yuvraj Luthra in Tashan-E-Ishq, Neil Khanna in Naamkarann, and Kabir Mittal in Ek Bhram Sarvagun Sampanna.

1914 – Sarukkai Jagannathan was the tenth Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 16 June 1970 to 19 May 1975. Educated at the Presidency College, Madras, Jagannathan was a member of the Indian Civil Service, and had served with the Central Government.

1966 – Panchanan Maheswari was a prominent Indian botanist, chiefly noted for his invention of the technique of test-tube fertilization of angiosperms. This invention has allowed the creation of new hybrid plants that could not previously be crossbred naturally.

1998 – Obaidullah Aleem was a modern Urdu poet.

2017 – Reema Lagoo was an Indian theatre and screen actress known for her work in Hindi and Marathi cinema. She began her acting career with Marathi theatre, after which she became popular for playing motherly roles in the 1990s and early 2000s.

2017 – Anil Madhav Dave was an Indian environmentalist and politician. He has served as the Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change in the Narendra Modi ministry from July 2016 till the time of his death in May 2017.

1912 – Shree Pundalik, India’s first feature-length Indian film, was released at the Coronation Cinematograph, Girgaum, Mumbai. This movie was produced and directed by Dadasaheb Torne alias Rama Chandra Gopal.

1974 – India’s first successful nuclear bomb test was detonated on the Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan. The assigned code name of this test was ‘Smiling Buddha’. With this, India became the 6th Nuclear Power.

1977 – The International Museum Day was created to promote the role of museums around the world.
