1837 – Sir Ramakrishna Gopal Bhandarkar KCIE was a scholar, orientalist, and social reformer.

1890 – Dhan Gopal Mukerji was the first successful Indian man of letters in the US. He also won a Newbery Medal in 1928.

1901 – Syama Prasad Mukherjee was a politician, barrister, and academician. He served as the Minister for Industry and Supply in PM Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet. After falling out with Nehru, protesting against the Nehru-Liaquat pact, Hindutva icon Mukherjee resigned from Nehru’s cabinet.

1924 – Mahim Bora was a writer and educationist from Assam. He was elected as a president of the Assam Sahitya Sabha, held in 1989 at Doomdooma. He was awarded with the most notably ‘the Padma Shri’ in 2011, ‘the Sahitya Akademi Award’ in 2001, and ‘the Assam Valley Literary Award’ in 1998.

1930 – Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna was a Carnatic vocalist, musician, multi-instrumentalist, playback singer, composer, and character actor. He was awarded with the Madras Music Academy’s Sangeetha Kalanidhi in 1978.

1956 – Anil Madhav Dave was an Indian environmentalist and politician. He was a member of the BJP and served as the Minister of State for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change in the Narendra Modi ministry from July 2016 till the time of his death in May 2017.

1986 – Jagjivan Ram, also popularly known as Babuji, was an independence activist and politician from Bihar.

1997 – Chetan Anand was a Hindi film producer, screenwriter, and director from India, who was awarded the Grand Prix Prize at the first ever Cannes Film Festival in 1946 for his debut film, Neecha Nagar. Later, he co-founded Navketan Films in 1949 with his younger brother Dev Anand.

2002 – Dhirajlal Hirachand Ambani, aka Dhirubhai Ambani was a business tycoon. He was the one to have founded Reliance Industries. He took Reliance public in 1977 and was worth $25.6 billion upon his death.

2002 – Thakur Ram Lal was a politician and leader of the INC in Himachal Pradesh. He was elected to the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha from Jubbal Kotkhai constituency in 1957.

2011 – Mani Kaul was a director of Hindi films. He was a reputed figure in the Indian parallel cinema who graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India.
