Top 3 India vs Pakistan World Cup clashes – India and Pakistan’s geographical enmity led to the biggest cricketing rivalry in the world with the matches also been termed as ‘Mother of all rivalries’. The growing political tensions between the two neighboring sides led to the severance of cricketing tournaments as well since 2012-13. While the two nations have not shown any interest in holding bilateral series’, the ICC has used the opportunity well to keep India and Pakistan in the same group to generate high energy clash which also soars the revenue of ICC.
While the two teams have often seen tensions on the field, the Pakistani side has not been able to beat India in a World Cup match though coming very close to victory some times. The kind of pressure can be understood from the fact that both teams are said to have had to hire sports psychologists before games to be mentally strong. As a result of hype and over expectation, a win is necessary for both the teams at any cost when they clash with each other on 16 June at Old Trafford. Though there are many stories of on-field rivalries, each one bigger than others, terming them on the scale of 1-10 is very difficult. This is why; we present three clashes which are etched in the memory of every cricket lover. Here they are:

Second Quarter Final, ICC world cup 1996, Bengaluru
India and Pakistan, the host themselves, were engrossed in a high scale match in the second quarter-final of the tournament at Bengaluru. Tendulkar and Navjot Singh Sidhu gave India a brilliant and brisk start batting first with a crucial first wicket partnership of 90 runs. Sachin fell on 31 while Sidhu hit a brilliant fifty which could not convert into a hundred and succumbed at 93. However, the knock which set a tough score for Pakistan was that of Ajay Jadeja when he smashed 45 runs off just 25 balls particularly hitting Waqar Younis, then pace sensation, for 40 runs in his last two overs while India set a tough score of 288.
As was the case, the Pakistan team also had a nerve of steel and were not going to go without a fight. At one stage, they were cruising comfortably before a mishap cost them the match. Aamir Sohail particularly became aggressive off Venkatesh Prasad delivery and hit him for a boundary through the cover region. He then showed his bat to Prasad pointing towards the cover area, the place where he hit the boundary. Prasad, burning with rage, gave back to him the very next ball by rupturing his stumps. Following this setback, the Pakistani team couldn’t really recover and eventually lost the match by 39 runs.

Semi Final, ICC World Cup 2011, Mohali
Before India became champions over Sri Lanka in Mumbai, the team was engrossed in a tough match against arch-rivals Pakistan at Mohali. Though it was a semi-final clash, it was termed a contest greater than the final as the top government machinery were present during the clash. Offered to bat first, Sehwag and Tendulkar gave India a perfect start, with Sehwag being extra hot with the bat scoring 38 off 32 balls. Gautam Gambhir’s dismissal in 19th over triggered a middle order collapse. Suresh Raina and Tendulkar steadied the inning to post a competitive total of 260, the former failing to another milestone before getting dismissed at 85.
Indian bowlers then came out all guns blazing while picking up wickets at regular intervals thereby sealing all the momentum of the game. The Pakistani side never could gather momentum and lost by 29 runs and Tendulkar was named man of the match for his well-made 85.
League Match, ICC World Cup 2003, Centurion
Group A was a lit group with India and Pakistan being grouped together. They clashed at Centurion to produce one of the most money minting matches of the tournament. Batting first, Pakistan put 273 runs on the board with Saeed Anwar hitting a brilliant century. India started briskly with Sachin putting a lid initially. But Pakistan came back into the game by picking Sehwag and Ganguly in back to back deliveries. Mohamad Kaif played a brilliant hand of 35 runs while Sachin scored a 50 before getting out. Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh ensured that no other wickets fell by stitching together an unbeaten 99 runs to see India home.
