∙ Villarreal and Spartak Moscow played out a 3-3 draw
Coming back to UEFA Europa League 2018-19 round 2 highlights, Premier League giants and two of the favourites to win this year’s Europa League, Arsenal and Chelsea continued their perfect starts to the tournament in round 2. Arsenal romped to a comfortable 3-0 win against Qarabag to make it 8 wins of out 8 in all competitions for them while Chelsea won 1-0 at home against Vidi to remain the only unbeaten English side across all competitions this season.
Arsenal V. Qarabag wasn’t as straightforward as the score-line suggests. With inadequacies at the back present for all to see, Qarabag took no time in exploiting Arsenal’s biggest deficiency. Running circles around Rob Holding and Kolasinac, Qarabag’s wingers’ Zoubir and Madatov used their pace to great effect. Finding themselves through on several occasions, Qarabag were let down by their dismal finishing, that came to haunt them at the end of the match.
For Arsenal scoring goals was never going to be an issue. The club has been transformed with the coming in of Emery, showing much greater when going forward and that was on display once again. Sokratis, Rowe and Guendozi all scored their first goals for Arsenal to see their side to a 3-0 win in the end.
Taking on Vidi at Stamford Bridge, the match wasn’t what Chelsea had expected it to be. Despite dominating, Chelsea failed to find the back of the net, with a chopped and changed side failing to impress in their audition for a regular first team start. A much cleaner second half finally saw them break the deadlock with misfiring striker Alvaro Morata getting on the end of a flick by Willian to neatly finish. The match wasn’t without heartache for Chelsea though who were given their fair share of scares by Vidi but held onto win 1-0 and stay top of Group L.
The match of the day was without a doubt between Villarreal and Spartak Moscow with both the sides playing out a six-goal thriller. A match which saw Villarreal take the lead was level after Spartak converted their penalty via Ze Luis.
The second half took off right from the word go with both sides coming out to take the lead. And it was Villarreal once again who took the lead before being pegged back yet again by Spartak who went onto eventually take the lead for the first time in the match in 85th minute. A Lorenzo goal looked to have finally settled the match in Spartak’s favour but living true to the theme of the night Villarreal’s Santi Cazorla converted an extra time penalty to see both sides share spoils on an eventful night in Russia.
In other notable results in round 2 of the Europa League saw RB Leipzig, Milan and Copenhagen all recording wins.
