UEFA Nations League Semi-Finals 2018-19: England Drawn Against Netherlands

The UEFA Nations League semi-final matches have been revealed with England taking on the Netherlands and hosts Portugal welcoming Switzerland. The UEFA Nations League finals draw that took place in Dublin drew the top four teams from Group A-D in League A to give us the UEFA Nations League semi-finals line-up.

England who qualified for the inaugural semi-finals of the showpiece tournament after dying winner by Harry Kane against Croatia will take on the Netherlands who overturned a 2-0 deficit against Germany in their culminating group stage match to book their spot in the final four. The semi-final will be the first competitive match between the two nations since Euros 1996 when England had comprehensively beaten Netherlands 4-1.

They had met as recently as March this year in a friendly with  England winning in Holland for the first time since 1969.

 The first semi-final scheduled for Wednesday, June 5 at the Estádio do Dragão, Portugal offers for England a first chance to stake a major claim on their first global title since 1966. After having ended up in fourth place at the world cup, England will be looking to right their wrongs from that event.

The UEFA Nations League semi-finals will also see Portugal and Switzerland clash it out against each in the second semi-final to be contested on June 6, Thursday. Switzerland had reached the knock-out phase after making a famous comeback against mighty Belgium, in a match that had to seem them upstage their opponents 5-2.

For home side, Portugal, the journey to the semi-finals has been much steadier. However, their defensive style of play will be tested thoroughly by Switzerland in what promises to be an intense clash between two sides in their quest for silverware.

The final of the Uefa Nations League will be played on Sunday, June 9, the same day as the third-place play-off with Porto’s Estádio do Dragão and the Estádio D. Afonso Henriques in Guimaraes in Portugal the host venues.
