Coming back to UFC 229 Khabib Vs McGregor match highlights, with the pre-match press conferences and the weighing providing us with plenty of entertainment going into the fight, one thing was sure to come to the fight. This was more than just a contest for the lightweight belt. This was a fight between two nemeses who hated each other. Sparring for more than a year off the pitch, their hate for each other was apparent. A feud that dated back to 2017 finally came to its conclusion on Sunday with Khabib showing McGregor his place, beating him black and blue to show McGregor that MMA isn’t a sport that can be won by just badmouthing your opponents.

Going into the match with a perfect record of 26-0, Khabib was always the favourite of MMA lovers. His style of play is one that is much superior to McGregor’s. Khabib thrives on his brutal, bone crouching punches and lethal takedowns, something that McGregor found too hot to handle come to the main fight. The Russian with a violent pound and ground game was clinically efficient on the ground once again, taking McGregor in a triangle choke that was impossible for him to get out of.

The match was won by Khabib given his superior secondary assets. Dodging and avoiding McGregor’s punches, evading and resisting them at will,Khabib was able to do what he does best. Breaching McGregor’s poor takedown defence, Khabib was able to get him on the mat and finish him off. Going into round 4, Khabib was all over McGregor, leading by 4 points, closing in on the win. However, it was a fight Khabib had no mood of taking all the way. He wanted to humiliate McGregor, finish the Irishman off infront of the entire world and get revenge for all the absurd comments McGregor had thrown his way.

Trapping McGregor’s neck in a rear-naked choke to make him tap out in the fourth round, Khabib emerged out of the show-piece event with a perfect 27-0 record. Unfortunately what followed next was something that puts the sport in a bad light. Jumping out of the cage, Khabib fought with a member of McGregor’s entourage, Dillon Danis, someone who had been insulting Khabib throughout the match.

The situation went onto get bad from worse with the octagon being swarmed by Khabib’s team-mates who took a swing at McGregor. A stunned McGregor was quickly escorted out of the building with the UFC refusing the give Khabib his belt in the arena, fearing it could lead to the situation going even further down-hill. The brawls saw three of Khabib’s team-mates being arrested by the US police following the incident.

Lightweight champion Nurmagomedov apologised following the incident but cited pre-match trash talk in which McGregor “talked about my religion, talked about my country, talked about father”.

A disgrace to a sport that was once considered a true test of a fighter’s strength and ability, the visuals left all viewers sick to the core. Taking away from what was a dominant victory for Khabib, one in which he showcased his wrestling abilities, the aftermath of the fight has left the UFC in a perilous situation. And nobody is more to blame than chief Dana White and the UFC. The UFC has over time helped fuel violent and curse filled, unsporting pre-match press conferences. What happened yesterday was long-coming. It’s high time the UFC introspect and change the path the game is taking to protect the integrity of the MMA.
