- Group A was decided with Uruguay and Russia progressing
Wednesday saw Group A and Group B in action at the FIFA World Cup. It was a day that saw all three matches being decided by a score line of 1-0, with all the major teams managing to scrape by. Group A was decided after Uruguay defeated Saudi Arabia by a goal to knock them and Egypt out of the tournament. While the result meant the two nations demise, on the other hand it ensured that Uruguay And Russia progress to round of 16. Group B also saw the favourites winning on the day. Both Portugal and Spain won 1-0 to find themselves joint top of the group with 4 points.
One week of the FIFA World Cup was marked with Portugal taking on Morocco. Portugal came into the match on the back of an impressive come-back draw against giants Spain while Morocco came on the back of an unlucky defeat to Iran. The maths was simple. A loss for Morocco meant them exiting the tournament. A win for Portugal meant their chances of making the round of 16 remained high. And it was all decided once again by Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo. The leading scorer in this year’s world cup leapt higher then everyone else to head n the opener for Portugal in as early as the fourth minute. It was all Morocco after there on though as they gave it their in an effort to keep their world cup dream alive. Chance after chance was thwarted away by Portugal goal-keeper Rui Patricio who produced some memorable saves to end Morocco’s 2018 world cup.
Contrary to popular belief that Saudi Arabia would be on the back of a thrashing by Uruguay, the 8:30pm IST kick-off was decided by a single Luis Suarez goal. The striker scored on his 100th appearance for Uruguay in an otherwise bland match to knock-out Saudi Arabia and seal their passage to the knock-out stages.
Spain V. Iran stayed true to the proceedings of the day. Underdogs Iran kept Spain at bay the entire first half and were unlucky to concede just a single goal in the second half. That Diego Costa goal was enough for Spain to come out victors although Iran deserved atleast a point from the match. And they seemed to have got it too before VAR ruled out their equaliser after it was deemed to be an offside. After Uruguay And Russia progress to round of 16, let’s see which other teams join them.
