The festival was adopted back in the 12th Century to mark the grave of the Muslim Sufi Saint, Nizamuddin Auliya, which is situated in Delhi. Ever since then, the festival is observed by the Chishti order. It is also believed that the renowned poet Amir Khusrau saw women wearing yellow on Vasant Panchami and he adopted that tradition. Even today, a particular section of the Chishti Order of Sufi Indian Muslims follows this practice.
