Vijay Hazare Trophy: Karnataka loses to Punjab

U19 World Cup star Shubham Gill scored a magnificent ton to help Punjab overpower table toppers Karnataka by four runs in a rain inflicted Vijay Hazare group match. Playing on home turf, Karnataka went down narrowly against Punjab after Indian test batsman KL Rahul’s 104 failed to see them past the finishing line. Despite the defeat Karnataka sit on top of the table with 10 points from four games.


With rain delaying the game due to a wet outfield, the Group A clash between heavyweights Punjab and Karnataka was reduced to 42 overs. Punjab started strongly as they got off to a quick start with the Karnataka bowlers struggling to cope with the wet conditions. Leading run getter in the U19 World Cup, Shubham Gill continued from he had left off. An aggressive action packed innings by him saw Punjab dominate from the first to last ball. The youngster put on a magnificent stand of 125 runs for the second wicket with Mandeep Singh to power Punjab to 269-3. He hit eight fours and six sixes in his 122-ball innings of 123 and also went on to equal Yuvraj Singh’s and Harbhajan Singh’s record of the most sixes in an innings in domestic cricket.


With bowlers finding it tough to grip the ball and fielders struggling to stop boundaries due to the wet outfield, Karnataka were in with a good chance as they came out to chase. Looking to increase the gap at the top of Group A Karnataka started positively with KL Rahul taking command of the chase. A superb 107 by him was not enough though as Punjab held their nerves in the ending stages of the match to take the match by four runs.


Karnataka continues to top the table with Railways, Punjab, Odisha and Baroda breathing right down their necks with eight points each al. Railways, Odisha and Baroda have a chance to move up the table having played a game less than Karnataka.
