In this dead rubber, West Indies batted first and posted a good score in front of Afghanistan. Even though the Universal Boss continued his poor form, the other Windies batsmen stepped up endgame in their last world cup game. Chris Gayle had no pressure in this last league, but he was still dismissed early for just 8 runs. Evin Lewis who was replaced by Sunil Amris got to his fifty and steadied the innings with Shai Hope. The 88 run stand between Hope and Lewis brought Windies back in the game. Then, Hetmyer and Hope got in action and continued from where Hope and Lewis left. Hetmyer got off to a promising start but he again failed to convert this one. Shimron Hetmyer was out on 39 runs.
The only good thing for West Indies was that Shai Hope held the innings together. But he too couldn’t last for long as Nabi dismissed him for well made 77 runs. Then it was Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder who took West Indies closer to the 300 run mark. Pooran and skipper Holder shared a partnership which helped the Windies to stay put in the game. Their 105 run stand took the game away from Afghanistan. Pooran batted well again, after his heroics against Sri Lanka the Windies youngster continued his good form and scored his 2nd fifty of the tournament. But just before West Indies reached 300, they lost the wickets of Pooran and Holder in the same over. Pooran was run out for 58 runs and skipper Holder played a good hand. He was dismissed for 45 runs. Then Carlos Brathwaite finished the innings on high for West Indies. He smashed lusty blows and took West Indies to 311 runs after the end of 50 overs.

It was a poor bowling performance from Afghanistan. They were sloppy in the field too. The Afghans bowled like they normally do. Dawlat Zadran took 2 wickets to his name while Nabi, Rashid, and Shirzad took 1 wicket each.

Afghanistan promised a lot in this chase but they still don’t have the art of finishing the innings. Skipper Naib got out early. He was dismissed for just 8 runs. But the innings was held by Ikram Ali Khil and Rahmat Shah. The 18-year-old Ikram was promoted up the order and didn’t disappoint. After a loss of an early wicket, Ikram shared a much-needed partnership with Rahmat Shah. The 133 runs partnership did wonders for Afghanistan. This partnership kept them in the game and made West Indies toil a bit. Ikram and Rahmat got to their fifties and looked to convert this start but Brathwaite dismissed Rahmat Shah for a well made 62 runs.
Then, Ikram got in the action with Najibullah and steadied the innings. Ikram played well and looked to reach the 3 figure mark. But he was dismissed by Gayle for magnificent 86 runs. After the loss of Ikram, Afghanistan lost the momentum in the chase. Najibullah Zadran too perished early for 40 runs. They lost wickets at regular intervals. Nabi and Shinwari couldn’t do much as they were out cheaply for the score of 6 and 9 respectively. The middle order failed but not Asghar Afghan. He tried his best. He scored a fighting 40 runs and was finally dismissed due to a good catch taken by Skipper Holder. It was all over for the Afghans there. Zadran and Rashid Khan were out cheaply. Shirzad hit some lusty sways and entertained the crowd. He was the last man to be dismissed on the last ball of the Afghan innings. Shirzad was out for 25 runs and Afghanistan was bundled out for 288 runs after their 50 overs. 288 is the highest score for Afghanistan in the second inning. But they fell 23 runs short of the target.

The Windies bowlers were threatened by Rahmat Shah and Ikram Ali Khil. But, they gave a good comeback. Even though the Windies fielders dropped some easy catches, they also managed to hold some tough catches also. The bowlers used slower deliveries to good effect. Carlos Brathwaite took 4 wickets and Kemar Roach took 3 wickets while Gayle and Oshane Thomas took 1 wicket each. West Indies started and ended their world cup campaign with wins and Afghanistan couldn’t win any matches from the 9 games they played till now. Shai Hope was the man of the match award winner for his 77 run knocks.
