West Indies and Sri Lanka played like they never did before. First, it was a match-winning hundred by Sri Lanka’s number 3, Avishka Fernando and then in reply, Nicholas Pooran scored a fighting hundred but that went in vain as Sri Lankan bowlers held their nerve to clinch a close contest.

The Lankans batted first and batted like never before. Sri Lankan skipper Karunaratne and Kusal Perera gave a good start to the Sri Lankan innings. They shared a partnership of 93 runs for the first wicket. As this opening was about to take a toll, the Windies skipper Jason Holder came up with a breakthrough. Dimuth Karunaratne was dismissed for 35 runs. Kusal Perera batted so well, he took Sri Lanka to the 100 mark but he was dismissed after reaching his fifty. Kusal was run out for well-made 64 runs. Then, Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando shared a partnership which brought the Lankan innings on track.
Their 89 runs stand allowed Sri Lanka to be in the game. Avishka Fernando was the one who got set well with Kusal Mendis. But Kusal didn’t make use of this start as Avishka did later on. Kusal Mendis was out for 39 runs. Angelo Mathews too couldn’t support Avishka well. Mathews was also dismissed early for 26 runs only. The supporting innings came from Lahiru Thiramane. He and Avishka took Sri Lanka to a very good score. In the process, Avishka Fernando scored his maiden ODI ton but soon he was out after scoring well made 104 runs. It was an innings from Lahiru Thiramane which took Sri Lanka to 338 runs after their 50 overs. Thiramane was not on 45 of just 33 runs and Dhananjaya de Silva was not out on 6 runs.

The Windies were thrashed all over the park by the Sri Lankan batsmen. They were too expensive in this innings. Jason Holder picked up 2 wickets with Cottrell, Thomas, and Allen took 1 wicket to their names.

The Windies ran a close second time in this tournament but they couldn’t cross the finishing line. Against the Kiwis, the margin was only 5 runs and here it was 21 runs. The Windies couldn’t grab those crucial moments which made them lose this game. The top 3 batsmen of the West Indies weren’t there to guide this chase. Shai Hope and Sunil Amris were out early. Chris Gayle played for a bit but couldn’t do much. He was out for just 28 runs. Hetmyer was unfortunately run out. He had shared a good partnership with Pooran which was threatening Sri Lanka. That partnership kept West Indies in the chase but Hetmyer was run out on 29 runs. Then, Jason Holder and Brathwaite tried to play a supportive role with Pooran but they couldn’t do much. They were dismissed for 26 and 8 runs respectively.
The supporting role came from Fabian Allen. He played a gem of a knock with Pooran. He and Pooran ran in close and made that target very achievable for Windies. Allen reached scored his fifty and he was run out in a very unfortunate way. His good knock ended for 51 runs. Nicholls Pooran stood there and scored his maiden hundred. This century came in 9th innings. Pooran was there but Sri Lankan veteran who didn’t ball for 2 years came suddenly and took the wicket of well set Pooran. Pooran was picked up by Angelo Mathews for a magnificent inning of 118 runs. After Pooran’s dismissal, everything was over for the West Indies. They batted their 50 overs but fell 21 runs short of the target. West Indies were restricted for 315 runs in their 50 overs and lost this match by a small target once again.

The Lankans bowled very well and kept Sri Lanka in the game. Malinga was the one who started well again, he took 3 wickets while Mathews, Rajitha, and Vandersay took 1 wicket each to their names.
Sri Lanka won this close thrilling match by 21 runs! Avishka Fernando was the man of the match for his maiden century.
