What is Indian Coast Guard Day ? – Indian Coast guard Day is celebrated on February 1 every year. Formed on 1st February 1977, ICG is the fourth largest coast guard in the world. The ICG was established under the Coast Guard Act 1978 of the Parliament of India.

History

In the 1960s, the smuggling of goods through sea routes was increasing. The Indian Navy was frequently helping the Indian Customs Department to patrol and intercept the smuggling. Over the years, several committees in conjunction with the Indian Navy and Indian Airforce were formed and reviewed the situation. The first committee, Nagchaudhuri Committee, recognized the requirement of patrolling in August 1971. It proposed to set up a registry of offshore fishing vessels and establishment of a force to patrol the coastline and intercept illegal activities.

In 1973, a program was set up wherein personnel from the Indian Navy were deployed for patrolling tasks under the provision of the Maintenance of Internal Security Act. However, after a while, the Indian Navy recommended creating a separate force for this task.

Another committee, Rustamji Committee was formed in 1974. The Department of Revenue also participated in the committee along with the Indian Navy and Indian Airforce. The committee proposed the establishment of the Indian Coast Guard to prevent security breaches, smuggling, and patrol the coastline. However, bureaucratic issues delayed the establishment of the coast guard.

Hence, in 1977 an interim Indian Coast Guard was established.

The first success of the Indian Coast Guard was achieved in 1999, when it recaptured a Panamanian-registered Japanese cargo ship, which was spotted near Kochi, heading toward Pakistan. The Indian Coast Guard and Indian Navy apprehended the ship.

The responsibilities of the Indian Coast Guard include:

  • Guarding territorial waters.
  • Helping in data collection.
  • Supporting in defence activities.

To commemorate the establishment of the Indian Coast Guard, February 1 is celebrated as the Indian Coast Guard Day. In 2022, 46th Indian Coast Guard Day is going to be celebrated. The ICG works in conjugation with the Indian Navy, Department of Revenue, Department of Fisheries, Central and State Police Forces.

The Indian Coast Guard has 156 ships and 62 aircraft in its organization. It has 5 air stations, 10 air enclaves, and 42 coastline stations.
