Harris was born on 20 October 1964 in Oakland, California to mother Shyamala Gopalan, a breast-cancer scientist, and father Donald J. Harris, a professor of economics in a Stanford University. In 1961, her father emigrated from British Jamaica for graduate study in economics at UC Berkeley. When she was 7, her parents got divorced. When she was 12, Harris and her sister, Maya Harris moved with their mother to Montreal, Canada. Harris was raised by her mother who was from Chennai. Harris’s grandfather was a freedom fighter of India. Harris completed her higher education at Howard University and the University of California. There, she joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the country’s oldest Black sorority.

Harris began her career from Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. In 2003, Harris was elected district attorney in San Francisco. In 2010, she was elected attorney general of California, and then in 2014, she was re-elected.
She was the first woman and first South Asian American woman to serve as the state’s top law enforcement official in California. Harris is also the first person of Indian descent to appear on a major presidential ticket. She is also the second African American woman to be elected to the United States Senate, the first from California.
