The day was marked to protect the interests of consumers in the open marketplace. It is also celebrated to spread awareness among both, consumers as well as businesses about consumer rights. Consumers International is a global membership organization that has consumer group members from more than 100 countries. The group is responsible for ensuring consumer rights worldwide and hence, also overlooks the celebration of World Consumer Rights Day.

Why is 15th march celebrated as World Consumer Rights Day

To fight these scenarios, consumer groups protested and eventually led to the foundations of the consumer forums for the following objectives:

  • Access to basic goods and services necessary for survival.
  • Protect themselves from hazardous products or services.
  • Information about products and services.
  • Choose from a variety of quality products and services.
  • Voice a complaint about a product or service.
  • Consumer education and representation.

There’s an international consumers forum that deals with this internationally and has members from almost all countries. Each year they hold an agenda and spend the year promoting it. In 2022, the agenda is – Fair Digital Finance. A 5-day forum will be conducted from 14th March to 18th March to discuss and raise awareness about digital finance in the marketplace.

The Indian Constitution lays down 6 Consumer Rights:

  1. Right to Safety – The right protects them against any dangerous or hazardous goods or materials. The consumers must check for quality marks on any goods they purchase.
  2. Right to be Informed – The consumer must be provided with all the information related to goods or services. For example, quantity, ingredients, weight, dates of production, date of expiry, etc.
  3. Right to Choose – The consumer has the right to choose from a variety of goods and services at a fair market price. In the case of monopoly, the consumers must be provided with good quality and fair priced products.
  4. Right to be Heard – The consumers will be heard at consumer forums in case of any complaints or grievances.
  5. Right to Seek Redressal – The consumers have the right to seek compensation in case of any grievances rightfully through consumer forums.
  6. Right to Consumer Education – The consumers must be made aware of their rights and be protected against unfair trade or market exploitation.

India celebrates its Consumer Rights Day on 24th December every year.
