A tourist traffic committee was formed in independent India with offices in Delhi and Mumbai. Later, the offices were setup in Chennai and Hyderabad as well. After seeing the success of the committee and realising the importance of tourism, a separate department was formed in 1958. The department was responsible for maintaining tourist places. The department was overlooked by the ministry of transport and communication.
