Born in a society following the Caste system, Ambedkar faced much inequality since childhood and succeeded in laying the foundation of a new India. Why mahaparinirvan din is celebrated – Ambedkar’s Mahaparinirvan –
Bhimrao Ambedkar was born on 14 April 1891 in the small village of Mhow in Madhya Pradesh. His family was of Marathi origin who believed in Kabir Panth. After some time, his whole family settled in Ambedway village in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra.
As a child, he was called Bhiwa. They belonged to the Hindu Mahar caste, which was then considered untouchable and due to this, they had to bear deep discrimination socially and economically. He was of a sharp mind since childhood. But due to untouchability, he faced many difficulties in doing his initial studies.

He entered the first class of English on 7 November 1900 at the Government High School located at Rajwara Chowk in Satara city, hence 7 November is celebrated as Vidyarthi Divas in Maharashtra. Babasaheb’s surname was Ambavadekar, but his teachers changed his name to Ambedkar from Ambavadekar in school records.
In April 1906, when Bhimrao was about 15 years old, he was married to a 9-year-old girl, Ramabai. He was in the fifth class then. Child marriage was prevalent in India in those days. He died on 6 December 1956.
