Why National Voters Day is Celebrated – 25th January is observed and celebrated as National Voters’ Day in India. This year, India will celebrate the 12th National Voters’ Day. The day is observed to spread awareness about the voting power, and how important it is for each individual to come forward and cast their vote. The National Voters’ Day falls on the same day when the Election Commission was formed in India. Each year, a new theme is decided in order to celebrate National Voters’ Day in the country.

In any democratic country, casting a vote is of paramount importance and when the young and new eligible voters do not come forward to exercise their right, the duty falls on the government. Back in Manmohan Singh’s government, his government came across this problem where many young and new voters did not come forward to either cast their vote or did not get their voter id card created. The government led by the then Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh decided to take a step forward in dealing with this issue. A meeting was then called of the Union Cabinet members, which was chaired by Dr. Manmohan Singh and the Law Ministry’s proposal was approved.

Ambika Soni, the then Minister of Information & Broadcasting informed the media that the enrolment rate of new voters in certain cases was as low as 20-25%, which was an alarming rate for any democratic government. The then government decided to start an exercise that will be held on 1st January to identify the eligible voters and they would be given their Electoral Photo Identity Card at the spot. The Manmohan Singh led government was of the notion that this would give a sense of pride and empowerment to the new voters, who until now have been hesitating to come forward and cast their vote and use their voice to make a difference.
