History of India’s first artificial island – Willingdon island Kochi

The history of the Willingdon island Kochi dates back to 1936. The idea of developing a new port in Kochi was first struck by Sir Robert Bristow. He was appointed by Lord Willingdon, the then Governor of the Madras Presidency, to create a new modern port at Kochi, the West coast of India.

This island was created at the time of the construction of the modern port in 1936. It was Robert Bristow, the chief protagonist, and engineer of the project who owned the first building on this artificial island. The first liner to arrive at the island belonged to Bibby Line and reached the port on 9 March 1935. The port’s basic structure completed in 1939, near the time of the Second World War. Soil around a small natural island was filled to make this island and the area was majorly claimed from Vembanad Lake, also called the Lake of Kochi, and is famous for backwaters.

The port was then found useful for the Royal Air Force, leading to the creation of a thriving military base. On October 1, 1942, the Royal Navy took over the base from the RAF. After this, when India gained independence in 1947, the control of the transport hub was transferred from the British Empire to India.
