Woeful Borussia Dortmund – Marco Reus? Jadon Sancho? Paco Alcacer? Alex Witsel. The key figure for Borussia Dortmund is the Belgian midfielder who helps Dortmund find stability in their midfield while providing further defensive capabilities. Witsel missed the game against Union Berlin due to a thigh injury and with Thorgan Hazard also out of the game, Lucien Favre decided to play Thomas Delaney in place of Witsel and Julian Brandt for Hazard.

Dortmund was outmuscled, outrun and quite frankly outperformed by the newly-promoted side. Berlin was ready for the match. A sea of red swarmed the pitch and even in this phase, Dortmund was doing well and seemed to trouble Berlin. The home fans kept on cheering for their team. The first goal of the game was scored by Union Berlin’s Marius Bulter who fired the ball into the bottom corner after a corner kick. As has been the story so far, Dortmund trailed yet again but not for long as a tap in from Paco from Jadon Sancho pass brought the game to the same level. The match ended with the scoreline 1-1 and had plenty of missed chances for BVB nearing the end of the second half.

The second half is where the lackluster performance of BVB really started. Berlin was able to take the lead once again at the start of the second half, once again from a fantastic kick from Bulter. Manuel Akanji and Hummels weren’t coordinated in the backline which often left a lot of space for Union Berlin’s players to run behind.

Both of them ended up losing the ball very often, which made the fans ask Favre the question as to why Dan Axel Zagadou who has performed against teams like Atletico Madrid is being kept at the bench, Zagadou is the tallest player in the squad who can be critical in corners. Yes, you can lose matches. Yes, you can even do it against teams as inexperienced at this level as Union Berlin that is participating in Germany’s top tier for the first time in the club’s history but, you need to go down swinging if you’re to convince anyone of your title-winning credentials.  The game ended with the scoreline 3-1 to the hosts.
