Wolfsburg Vs Bayer Leverkusen – Wolfsburg thrashed Bayer Leverkusen 4-1 on Tuesday to regain their hopes of qualifying for the European League next season. It was a surprise win for the visitors and the home side’s first defeat since the resumption of the Bundesliga.

Wolfsburg dominated the first half completely with Marin Pongracic opening the scoreline for the visiting team with his 43rd-minute conversion of Maximilian Arnold’s free-kick. Another attempt from the visitors was thwarted early on when Leverkusen keeper Lukas Hradecky denied Joao Victor’s early attempt to score.

Perhaps the only player who played phenomenally well for the home side was Hradecky as he managed to produce two more saves after the game resumed in the second half. But even his superior goalkeeping prowess could not stop the visitors from increasing their lead over the home side. Maximilian Arnold’s 64th-minute goal and Renato Steffen’s 67th-minute goal helped the visitors increase their lead to 3-0.

Later in the game, the second goal from Pongracic in the 75th minute meant it was almost over for the home team. The scoreline being 4-0, the home team almost surrendered to their opponents when Julian Baumgartlinger’s 85th-minute close-range goal provided some sort of consolation for Leverkusen.

The home side’s defeat came after their two-match winning streak. They beat Borussia Monchengladbach 3-1 and Werder Bremen 4-1 but failed to capitalize on their momentum. The loss of cheer from the fans because of the matches being played behind closed doors can be a factor for their loss. The defeat led them to slip to fifth place with 53 points from 28 games while the visitors remain at the sixth place with 42 points from 28 games with hope for qualifying for the Europa League next season.

Later in the game, Bayern’s defense was too solid for their arch-rivals. Favre showed his desperation for a comeback when he substituted Haaland for U.S. teenager Giovanni Reyna. Mahmoud Dahoud’s 80th-minute attempt from a distance was also blocked by Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer thus enabling the visitors to hold on to their lead.
