India lost their second match in a row in the Women’s Hockey World League Semi-Final 3-0 to a far superior Argentina side in Johannesburg.Despite the defeat India managed to qualify for the top 8 of the tournament as they finish fourth out of five teams in Pool B. They will now take on England in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
World No.3 Argentina was in the mood when they took on India in what was the final pool match for both the teams. They set the pitch ablaze as they went on to take the lead in only the second minute thanks to a Roccio Sanchez strike.Maria Granato got the second just before the first quarter to kill off any Indian hopes of a comeback. Argentina dominated to end up with 60 percent of possession and nine penalty corners to India’s solitary one.Noel Barrionuevo went low past Indian goalkeeper Savita in the 25th minute to round up the scoring for Argentina. Though Rani manufactured a great shot on goal within the final two minutes to the Argentina goalkeeper denied India a goal as the South Americans remained unbeaten in the tournament. They rounded up a well-deserved victory with a clean sheet and breezed into the quarterfinals.
The defeat made it two consecutive losses for India, having previously lost their third match 1-4 to the United States of America. Despite these losses, India has qualified for the quarter-finals and will face England in a last eight clash on Tuesday. Wishing them all the luck!
