India continued their fine run in the Women’s World Hockey League Semi-Finals in Johannesburg to make the quarter-finals of the tournament. Preeti Dubey got the only goal of the match to see India past Chile 1-0.This was India’s first win of the tournament.
Both team’s started with intent and created plenty of chances. Both teams traded penalty corners in the first quarter with Chile winning the first in the fourth minute of the match while India earned their first short corner in the 12th minute. It looked India had however struck first blood in the 12th minute but the goal was overturned after a video referral.Depsite attacking hockey from both sides, the first half ended goal less.
India finally made a breakthrough when Preeti Dubey slotted home in the 38rd minute in the third quarter. Rani and Preeti worked in tandem with Preeti producing the finishing touch with a quick nick. India had to switch tactics after Renuka Yadav was yellow carded and they were left with 10 men in the final quarter.
Chile attacked relentlessly in the final quarter which led to tense moments for India’s defence. The final 15 minutes saw Chile making desperate attempts to break the Indian defence with them winning back-to-back penalty corners in the 55th minute. India did well to defend and keep a clean slate which saw them past the finishing line.
This win was a huge step forward for the winning team and will bode them well further in the tournament. They will take on Argentina in their final Pool B match on July 16.
