World Cup 2019 Umpires and Referees – The ICC did announce the list of officials for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 to be conducted by it in England and Wales. The list of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 match officials includes that of match umpires, TV umpires, match referees and other officials as well. A total of 22 officials (16 umpires and 6 referees) will ensure the successful conducting of the world cup matches starting May 30.
A tournament on the lines of a world cup requires officials who can handle a lot of pressure while taking decisions pertaining to the conduct of the match. Therefore, the ICC takes cognizance to send only the elite panel umpires to officiate in the matches of importance. The ICC has also taken measures to manage the workload of the officials by giving them ample breaks between the world cup matches. The list of officials officiating the match would be released by the ICC soon for the general public on its website.
In the recent tournaments including that of IPL, the role of umpires and other officials came under heavy scrutiny and criticism with some decisions becoming utterly wrong at crucial junctures. Such mistakes often cost a team the complete match thereby impacting its run in the tournaments. The ICC has ensured that it has taken enough measures to ensure that such mistakes are not being repeated in the mega tournament. The role of an on-field umpire is huge even if the ICC has brought in a lot of technology such as snicko-meter, Hawkeye and ball-tracker into play. The third umpire decisions have also given cognizance to the on-field umpires through ‘umpire’s call’.
