- Journalists’ ability to conduct their jobs is harmed when they are attacked. According to Al Jazeera, UNESCO has discovered that online attacks against female journalists have increased dramatically. A total of 900 women journalists took part in the study, which was done in 125 countries.
- According to Reporters Without Borders, India is ranked 142 out of 180 nations in terms of press freedom in 2021.

- The $25,000 prize is awarded annually and is named after Colombian journalist Guillermo Cano Isaza, who was slain in front of his newspaper El Espectador in Bogotá, Colombia on December 17, 1986. The Guillermo Cano Isaza Foundation (Colombia), the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation (Finland), Namibia Media Trust, and the Democracy & Media Foundation Stichting Democratie & Media have all contributed to the project.
- The Prize is given on the advice of an international jury of experts. The jury consists of six independent members, one from each of the six UNESCO-defined areas, representing all sorts of media, including digital media, in other words, six people appointed in their individual capacity by the Director-General of UNESCO for a period of three years, renewable once.
- The Director-General of UNESCO chooses the winner based on the jury’s judgments and recommendations.
- The Regulations for the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize will govern all aspects of the Prize’s administration.
