There are many disadvantages in storing water above ground – such as loss of water from evaporation, deposition of silt, pollution, and loss of cultivable land. But groundwater dams can prevent all these losses. Such dams dating back to the time of the Roman Empire have been found in Sardinia Island and Tunisia. This shows that they were built by the ancient civilizations of North Africa. A sand deposition dam has also been discovered in Arizona, which was constructed in the eighteenth century. In recent years this technique has been used in India, Southern, and East Africa, and Brazil.

Types of dams for groundwater

The groundwater dam stops the water flowing inside the ground and deposits it inside. In addition, it can also divert groundwater runoff, which can be used to recycle the water around it or to lift up the aquifers that have a very low amount of groundwater, and thereby bring the water to a removable level. There are basically two types of groundwater dams – Adasthal Dam and Sikta Harvesting Dam. The subsurface dams are constructed below the surface of the ground. It helps in depositing water in natural aquifers. Conversely, the Sikta Harvesting Dam helps in stopping the water in the catchments, which is deposited in the dam itself. In general, any groundwater dam is a mixture of these two.
