What a sensational end we had to this Sunday in the riveting Indian Premier League. With the narrative being Virat Kohli vs Dhoni, the levels of expectations were always going to go up and we were not left disappointed after the last ball, the edge of the seat thriller saw the match finally land the Royal Challengers Bangalore way one last time. A cliff-hanger, one that switched hands multiple times, saw RCB maintain their composure of the last ball of the innings as wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel ensured he didn’t err with his throw. It was a run out that ensured this wasn’t going to be another ordeal for Kohli, seeing his side scrape their way to their third win of this season.

Having scored a mere 161 while batting first on a batting friendly wicket, RCB knew that nothing but quick wickets would keep them in the encounter. And that is exactly what their pacers managed to deliver, getting 4 wickets in the powerplay period, a feat they had failed to achieve in the entirety of the tournament.

As Watson (5) walked back after yet another false innings, Steyn struck twice in his opening over, cleaning up Raina off the immediate next ball to see CSK hammered at 6-2 in the first over itself. And as Umesh got two for himself as well in the form of Faf du Plessis (5) and Kedar Jadhav (9), CSK saw themselves crumbling for 28-4 in the powerplay overs with everything falling apart for them.

It was from there though that RCB started squandering the incentive garnered by them in the early part of the innings. As Dhoni and Rayadu got about the task of hold fort, a 55-run stand between the two saw them paper over the huge cracks that had developed, negating the threat of RCB’s bowlers. The partnership helped resume some sort of semblance to CSK’s run chase, leaving Dhoni with the final five overs to yield his willow and try to make a meal out of nothing for CSK.

What worked massively in the run chase for CSK was the immense batting depth that the side has at its disposal. Despite half the side back in the pavilion, CSK saw Jadeja and Bravo waling out next to accompany Dhoni, Kohli had to be on the money in rotating his bowlers in the final stages, a task that he did extremely well before Umesh threatened to spoil it all for his side.

Three sixes and a four took Dhoni up to 84 and his side within the two runs before Parthiv found the wickets with his throw to find Shardul short of his crease. It was a win that left Kohli and his side ecstatic, finally having gotten the Chennai Super Kings to falter at the stadium, breaking a 7-match losing spree at this stadium against the opposition.
