The World Cup and Commonwealth Games gold medallist began her gold medal effort in fine fashion by topping the qualification. She scored 576, which included a series of 95, 96, 96, 96, 95, 98, to be ahead of second and third in the qualification, Russia’s Enina Lana and Chinese Lu Kaiman with 569.
The gulf in class between Manu and her opponents was apparent with the fact that she slipped to second place only once during the final. She began the eight-woman final with a 10.0 and followed it up with a 10.1 and 10.4 to lead Stage 1 with 99.3 after a sequence that included seven scores of 10 and above.
Stage 2 saw her maintain her dominance over the field with two scores of 9.8 to start off with. Improving, she followed them up with shots of 10.1 and 9.9 to extend her lead over her closest rival Thailand’s Kanyakorn Hirunphoem on course to a record setting triumph.
This is an important win for me. It will be a morale booster (after the Asian Games disappointment) as I look forward with an aim to bring home more laurels,” Bhaker said after winning the gold.
Saurabh Chaudhary soon followed up his compatriot Manu Bhaker’s feat with an impressive showing of his own. Throughout the Youth Games, the shooter from Meerut had been in scintillating form, shooting a total of 580 out of 600 to top the qualifying round.
In the finals, Chaudhary’s consistency ensured that he stayed above the pack despite registering in four scores of under 10 to start with. He slowly picked up the pace to shoot 10.7, 10.4, 10.4 and 10.00 to pick up the yellow metal.
